The Shift Coach Program: Teaching Nursing Leadership and Infection Preventionists to become Infection Control Champions

Infection Prevention/Control; Nursing; CDC

Born out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Project Firstline and modeled on Brown University’s I CAN initiative, the Shift Coach Program speaks directly to infection preventionists (IPs) and nursing leadership, handing them a roadmap for teaching and engaging all long term care facility staff in safety culture.

A Shift Coach is an informal unit-based leader who serves as an influencer and coach and who feels comfortable speaking up and helping their co-workers to utilize infection prevention practices.

Through six microlearning modules, nursing leadership and IPs will walk through discovering the goals of the program, learning the five elements of success for cultivating Shift Coaches, and learning how to incorporate these lessons within an organization's framework for infection prevention.

What will the infection preventionist or nursing leadership gain by completing this training?

The three goals of this program include:

  1. Empowerment: Shift Coaches are informal influencers who model best practices and offer just-in-time feedback, empowering staff to hold each other accountable.
  2. Infection Prevention: Strengthen infection prevention and address areas of vulnerability throughout the organization.
  3. “See it, Say it, Share it culture”: Shift Coaches are not only able to provide just-in-time coaching and education to peers, but also offer valuable intel to other staff. The course turns guidelines into hands on habits, that keep residents and coworkers safer every shift.

How do I gain access?

Access is simple and free for AHCA/NCAL members and nonmembers.

  1. Step 1: Create or log into your AHCA Education account, hit the green Register button on the Shift Coach Program page, then click the Course Contents tab to launch the modules.
  2. Step 2: Complete the final quiz to collect two nursing CEs.

By equipping IP’s and Nurse Leadership with the tools found in this training, organizations can build a resilient culture where everyone—residents and staff—are protected.
