Celebrating 25 Years: Stories of Assisted Living

Assisted Living

As the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, there is no better time to highlight the amazing stories of the profession. Assisted living providers in more than 30,000 communities across the country do amazing work every day. And the one million residents they care for have so many unique stories to share.

Below are a few of the stories NCAL has documented over the years. More are available to view on the AHCA/NCAL YouTube channel.

  • Inspiring Generations: Experience the Avalon at Bridgewater in New Jersey, how its leaders have fostered an environment of family, and they continue to inspire generations in assisted living.

  • Aging Magnificently - The Heritage Pointe Dragonflies: Go inside Heritage Pointe Senior Living in Marshall, Minnesota, where residents participate in exciting games that promote teamwork and friendship. Experience the joy of connection as residents come together, fostering a strong sense of belonging within their community and “aging magnificently.”

  • Purpose and Honor – Awakenings: Learn about the award-winning memory care program, Awakenings, at Ecumen Lakeview Commons in Maplewood, Minnesota and how it has transformed the lives of residents and family members.

  • Taking Flight: Every day assisted living and senior living communities are helping residents connect with the past and look toward the future. Check out how Covenant Living and the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation helped retired Navy pilot Jim take flight in a World War II-era biplane.

  • The Bus Stop to Nowhere: The Bridges by EPOCH at Hingham in Massachusetts built a 'bus stop to nowhere' in the courtyard of their memory care community. The idea serves as an example of person-centered, life enrichment programming aimed at improving the quality of life for assisted living residents living with dementia.

  • Intergenerational Programming: Learn how Golden Oaks, an assisted living community in Stillwater, OK, attached a pre-kindergarten class to bring seniors and children together.
