Ending of CHNV Parole and Work Authorization Temporarily Paused

Earlier this week, on April 14th, a U.S. District Court Judge temporarily paused the ending of the Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela (CHNV) parole and work authorization program.

It is important to note that the CHNV humanitarian parole program is separate from temporary protected status (TPS). CHNV allowed individuals outside of the U.S. from the noted countries to apply for humanitarian parole and if approved they were issued a parole document that allowed them to travel to the U.S. and remain in the U.S. for a temporary period.

The U.S. government may designate a foreign country for TPS due to a natural disaster, armed conflict, or other condition in a foreign country that makes it unsafe for foreign nationals from that country who are already in the U.S. to return. If a foreign national is in the U.S. when their home country is designated for TPS, then they may be eligible to apply for TPS benefits, which include work authorization.
